Tories will not act to curb movie piracy
Tories will not act to curb movie piracy (Canada.com)
Movie piracy is a big issue on the Internet today. Organizations like the MPAA blamed movies that were recorded on camcorder for $118 million dollars worth of losses in 2005. Of course I would like to know where this number came from, and how they know exactly know how much they lost due to camcorder piracy. Piracy is of course an issue, especially with the rise of the Internet, and increased availability to transfer large movies quickly. Every year the speed of broadband increases and so does the amount of subscribers to broadband internet. The MPAA seems to be unfairly blaming Canada for a large portion of camcorder movie piracy. Canada does have laws against camcorder piracy, but the punishment is only severe if the government can prove that it was being recorded for commercial gain.
I very much agree with Canada's stance on the issue. While not denying the need to stop movie piracy, they do not feel it should be an urgently important issue on the Canadian government. There are already laws set up, and while they may not be the best laws, it would take away from more important and concerning issues if they spent much time trying to modify them. Not to mention the fact that all of these studies are questionable.
